Baby Surprise Jacket Workshop
Learn to make this iconic and adorable baby jacket! Elizabeth Zimmermann designed this sweater in 1968, and, since then, it has been knitted countless times. Made back and forth in garter stitch, looking like nothing you have ever seen, it is then folded and completed by sewing up the shoulder seams. Make either newborn or one year old size depending on the wool and needles used.
Length: Three 2-hour sessions
Class Requirement: Must be comfortable with cast on and off, knit and purl.
Newborn Size: Fingering weight approx. 300m / 275y using a 2.3-3.5mm 24" circular needle for a gauge of 28 stitches per 4”
Toddler Size: Worsted approx. 350y / 320m using a 5-5.5 mm 24" circular needle for a gauge of 20 stitches per 4”
Materials Included: Offical paper pattern from SchoolHouse Press.
Techniques you'll learn: Paired increases and decreases, picking up stitches, one-row/yarn over buttonhole, attached i-cord border, and how to plan stripes, hoods and collars.
Homework: Complete before Session 1 - Knit and block a 4” gauge swatch in the wool of your choice. Cast on 160 stitches on your choice of needle. Homework will be required between sessions - please be sure you'll have the time to complete required work before each session. All the 'knitting' will be done outside of class while all techniques will be worked in class.
For help with achieving the correct gauge in your swatch please book a Private Lesson. Lessons can be booked through our website, look for the Knit Doctor under Classes.
